1. Always ensure that the painter you hire is insured for at least the state's minimum requirements.
- Painting contractors in Minnesota are required to hold a minimum of $250,000.00 general liability insurance, as well as workers compensation insurance for each of their employees.
- Ensuring that that painter you hire is properly insured protects your assets, and also saves you from any liability if a work related injury occurs on your property.
- It's also a good idea to make sure that the painting company you hire carries a commercial auto insurance policy, as well. For obvious reasons.
2. Make sure that your painter is registered as a contractor with your state.
- This one is an obvious one. You don't want want be hiring some fly by night crew that has little to no experience, and zero accountability with the state that you're residing.
3. Check out your painter's website.
- This is an obvious too. You don't want to be hiring a painting company that wrote out an estimate on a piece of paper with their chicken scratches all over a poorly ripped piece of carbon paper.
- Ensure that your painter has a professional format with their estimates, preferably with a company letterhead, or a logo.
4. Ask your painter to provide you with 2-3 referrals.
- Every good painter will have no issues with providing as many positive referrals as you'd like, within reason. 2-3 referrals will give you a pretty good bit of information about the company you're considering hiring.
- If they're good, you'll hear about how great their work is from the referrals they provide.
- You'll also get credible reviews, first hand from people in your local community.
5. Make sure your painter provides a detailed estimate.
- We've all received the estimates that were on a piece of paper that offered absolutely zero descriptions for how the project was going to be executed. Make sure their descriptions are thorough so that you have an understanding of the procedures they're going to conduct, and that they align with your project's needs.
6. Ask your painter if they include surveys as a part of their service
- Painting companies who include surveys as a part of their service have already set the precedence that meeting your expectations is in their best interest, and that they value your opinion about their company.
- If they don't offer surveys with their services, one can only assume that they don't care one way or another what you think about their quality of work, and their overall customer experience.
